The Caldor fire in California burned through remote areas in the Sierra Nevada for two weeks and then descended toward the major population centers along Lake Tahoe. The fire spread to more than 186,000 acres and was 15 percent contained.
President Biden met virtually with leaders from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and pledged his support to Louisiana after Hurricane Ida hit the coast. The Category 4 hurricane has now been downgraded to a tropical storm.
Hurricane Ida made landfall near Port Fourchon, La., on Sunday, the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, slamming the southeastern coast with dangerous winds and storm surge and leaving most residents without power.
Gov. John Bel Edwards said Hurricane Ida would be 'one of the strongest hurricanes to hit anywhere in Louisiana since at least the 1850s.' The hurricane is expected to make landfall in the state as a Category 4 storm by late Sunday or early Monday.
