Thursday Threesome

Onesome: Where did you first hear of a blog?
That would be in 1998 when I asked Zeldman what was new on his site. His answer was “There’s something new there EVERY DAY”. A saw his “Daily report”, and I thought “What a cool way to keep people coming back!”.

Twosome: The first weblog you read regularly?
Holy memes, Batman!!!! Definitely Have a cuppa… I like Bat People!

Threesome: What keeps you coming back to a blog?
Freshness and variety. If it’s interesting, and useful… I’ll have to come back for more.

Site update

My apologies for the recent loading speed of this site. There’s another site on this server, which has gotten quite popular, and it’s consuming so much bandwidth that it’s slowing all of the other sites on this server. This will be resolved later this week as that site will get it’s own server.

Many functions here will be switched from CGI to MySQL to speed things up too.

Work will resume on Server-Space, and will be re-opened to the public soon, offering 20MB sites for $8.99 a month!

Interested? Feel free to contact me, if you want to set up ASAP!

Hypothetical question: If we set up a Cafe Press-like capability for you to sell your HIGH QUALITY merchandise on your site… would you be interested?

Font site update….

At the request of Fontographer Michael Bujardet, the following fonts have been updated in the Font Section:

Bujardet Freres, Candy Cane Match and Dactylographe.

He’s a talented guy, and a class act. He found the information in the zip files either wrong or missing, and asked me to fix it… rather than remove it, and be nasty about it. He maintains a large site himself and understands that sometimes your sources (I get most of my fonts from FTP sites and CD’s) are less than reliable. Stuff like this happens. I truly appreciated his willingness to continue working with me. He even thanked *me* for *my* support!

Well, hey… the font section is the most popular section on this site. I couldn’t have done it without the contributions of talented folks like him. So I thank Mr. Bujardet, Ray Larabie, and all the other talented folks that make my font section possible. It’s a lot of hard work making fonts, and I try to support these guys whenever possible.

However…

I have to deal with the occasional “Shareware Weenie“, who thinks I’m indebted to them, and they have the right to address me like I’m a lower form of being. Like this letter I got the next day from some *other* fontographer not worth mentioning:

Hi –
I’m the author of [name of crappy font] and [name of crappy font], which are available on your server. The read-me with those files is inaccurate, and the Windows version is unauthorized. Please remove the fonts and associated files from your server. Thanks very much.

You may wish to link to my type page, where users can pay for my fonts via PayPal:

Uhm… let me think about it. No!

WTF? This guy practically accuses me of pirating his fonts (one of which I cant even find on my site), talks down to me in an insulting manner, and expects me to be nice and link him???? I don’t think so. I removed his fonts, and that’s that.

I don’t have I problem with these guys wanting to get paid for their hard work (hell, they deserve it!)… But damn, respect goes both ways, chuckles.

This Week in the Poconos…

The Brooks Kidz – We’ve been working really hard on a new design, and we think you’re gonna like it… some things still need some work, but they were anxious, especially for people to sign their guesbook (hint. hint).

Btw… it’s just “Brooks Kidz” now. Christina’s 15, and we don’t want her new “ultra cool” friends snickering about her being an “Adorable Brooks Kid”, right? :0)

Newz & Gossip (Blog Warz)

  • Whoah… what’s going on here? – Rivervision -vs- Jimformation… I’m afraid to comment much about it except this one is as entertaining as hell! Better go read it before one of them apologizes and takes it down.
  • Last week’s Blog Warz – I really should let this go, but after an amazing barrage of emails with people with their own horror stories of their encounter with “My former blog twin“, few people had the courage to publicly voice an opinion on the matter… so I commend Kare and Simply Lee ( here, here, inital reaction here) for presenting, in my opinion, very well-balanced and courageous viewpoints.I mean… if some people “aren’t allowed to use someone’s site”, or if they reserve a right to reject people based on their “vision” of what the web is… why can’t we express our feelings on our own sites (or password-protected discussion boards) without fear of being menaced? It’s *still* a free country last I checked.
  • Gone Brooklyn – I don’t know why I waited this long, but I added Brooklyn Kid to my list of daily reads (did ya click my Related Links menus yet? Tres Chic, non?)Aside from living right by Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, in Williamsburg, and my new-found home-sickness… Mr. Cosentino is responsible for one of my most favorite fonts… and one of the most popular downloads on this site.

Someone recently told me I still have a “Brooklyn accent” (I was asked to say “Dawg” three times.). Weird, considering most people thought I was from FL or CA because of my lack of an accent when I lived there for 21 years.

    I do say “Fuck” a lot, don’t I? :0)

  • Just so I’m not the next victim of “Radical Feminism”… I also added Brooklyn Girl. Another great site… and she’s kinda cute for a Bunny Rabbit
  • JEEEEEZUS!!!! Can somebody show Dave Winer how to spell “Transitioning”??!!??
  • “I saw ‘dama B’Laden!!!! I saw ‘dama B’Laden!!!!” – That was 4-year-old Johnny’s reaction as we passed a mosque on Northern Boulevard, coming in to NYC friday night. Not a lot of muslims wearing turbans and long beards in the Poconos… so imagine seeing Assama plastered all over the tv, and then seeing a tall man, with a long beard and turban, enter this mosque. Poor kid. He’s gonna be okay.
  • I am strongly against any violence against Muslims in this country, buuuuut…. how the hell am I supposed to react when I see this fruitcake plastered all over the newsstands???? What part of “Nobody supports the Taliban” didn’t he get? This guy is a BEAT-DOWN waiting to happen.
  • Evil Bert is Dead

Sometime last night, Web Designer Dino Ignacio pulled the plug on his long-running internet-cult-classic “Bert is Evil” site. It was his own personal decision. No “cease & desists” or threats involved.

Seeing his work on a pro-Taliban protest was apparently too much for him. The Children’s Television Workshop, is also panicking at the site of one of their creations, broadcast around the world next to the most dangerous man alive.

I think these people need to reach deep down inside, and see the hilarious irony of it all… Osama’s own supporters made an ASSHOLE out of him. And Bert helped. Whether it was our Special Forces slipping it into the printing plates, or the “official story” of an honest mistake by the printer… it was effective and humiliating nonetheless.

The story below about “Sesame Street being bombed” was a fabrication. Elmo, Big Bird, Zoe and the gang are all alive & well. It was propaganda. I took that day’s events, like any good American, and rolled with it…..

<The sound of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” blaring in the background>

I want the memory of that protest in Bangladesh embedded in the world’s mind forever. The world needs to talk about it, and laugh at Ass-ama forever. Let the world know that The Taliban and Al-Qaeda’s contempt for our culture will be the means to their demise… you were humiliated by a muppet, Assama!

    Thank you to…

    • Dino Ignacio – Who has a great-looking site with lots of other fun stuff… check it out.
    • The Children’s Television Workshop, for 31 years of great entertainment, and shaping many of us into the grown-ups we are today…
(They have a great section called “Tragic Times, healing words”, offering help to parents in explaining 9/11…)

    And most of all….

Bush orders air strike on Sesame Street

Bush Addresses the Joint Chiefs of Staff on the latest assault against Evil Muppet Bert. (Shown here in a photo with Osama bin Laden in 1998)

    Photo: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) – In his vow to to “rid the world of evildoers, and punish those that harbor them”. President Bush signed an executive order to launch a surprise air attack on Sesame Street this morning.

The attack was launched in retaliation against Bert, a muppet with ties to the Al-Qaeda terrorist network, several mob organizations, and feared thoughout the underworld as “That scary little furry guy”. The death toll is mounting of up to 150 muppets and rising. The toll may be higher, as correspondents are seeing fur, felt, and stuffing all in the ruins.

“But why attack all of us???”, cried a resident, who only wanted to be referred to as “Gina”, “we’re as terrified of Bert as the rest of the world… we’ve done nothing wrong”.

Chilling evidence of Bert’s involvement in the latest terrorism attacks. In a rally in Bangladesh, 9/10/01, Bert is seen in a supportive poster.

    Photo: Reuters

The main target was Mr. Hooper’s store, now in ruins. It was a suspected front for Bert’s operations.

President Bush addressed the Joint Chiefs of Staff this morning, and was quoted in saying: “Make no mistake, this nation will not rest until this furry little bastard is turned into someone’s oven mitt….”

There is no evidence of whether Bert survived the attack. Or was anywhere NEAR Sesame Street at the time.

The President will address the Nation tonight at 9:30 PM (That’s when the little hand is on the 9, and the big hand is on the 6). To discuss this latest operation, entitled OPERATION: Nail the GODDAMN Sock Puppet.

Brought to you by the Letter “S”.
    For “SPECIAL FORCES (Psychological Operations)”
    and “SUCK MY DICK, OSAMA!”

    Font Site Operational

So far A-S is operational on the Font Section. I should be done late tonight, and then back to redesigning my ISP.

    An impassioned plea for peace

At a time where we should all be coming together… it kills me to watch my *FORMER* Blogging Twin, slowly and painfully lose his marbles.

Sources say he stays up all night, guarding his comment box, checking his referrer logs, running traceroute on every visitor… doesn’t eat, sleep or shower (eew..)… just waiting for an attack that may or may not come.

Please, whoever you are… leave Mr. Jenett (pronounced “Paranoid Schizo”) alone?

Can’t we all just get along?Maybe you’re one of the many, many people he recently kicked out of his projects because your host implemented pop-under ads without your consent? Or you redesigned, and forgot to put one of his buttons back up? Or you got one of his creepy emails full of threats for gawd-only-knows-what…

We forgive you for your callous and heartless disregard for this poor man’s feelings… but right now, KNOCK IT OFF…YOU’RE MAKING BABY JESUS CRY! 🙁

Perhaps I share a tiny, miniscule (actually, microscopic!) share of the blame. Maybe I was a little heavy handed yesterday, demanding you stop. I know I shouldn’t feel this way, but I do. Now I am on my knees begging you to stop harassing this “meaningless web person” (in his own words!).

Can’t we all just get along?

I would have come to Joe’s rescue sooner, but I’m a tad busy these days. I am saddened, stunned… and will now join Baby Jesus and weep.

Today’s Lesson: “The more bridges you burn, the less places you have to run and hide.”
