Dear Mary Stewart: Please take your spam for phentermine and shove it clear up your…

Between the four blogs I am currently managing… I have deleted well over 1,000 comment spams FROM this jerkoff in the past few days. You’ll never see them because WordPress has some awesome features that automatically detects spam and throws it INTO a queue, pending moderation.

Now for someone who asks “why do these people spam, it can’t be all that profitable?!!?”.

Apparently, you don’t understand the spamming industry.
The companies and websites that you are being spammed with are not the ones doing the spamming. They hire someone to do this.

The spammers get paid whether you buy the crap or not.

A friendly tip about Movable Type

(Well, besides “Dump it and go with WordPress”. You already know that.)

Basically watch out for dashes when you import/export posts. The text file you import is separated by 5-8 dashes in its features, so if you have some yutz who writes:

“Here are my thoughts:
………………………………..
blah, blah, blah blah”

It is going to screw you up if you ever import that post back INTO MT at a later date.

Elsewhere on my site, I am recreating my entire Whuzzup archives (going all the way back to 1998), and I am triple-checking all my “import.txt” files. What a bitch.

Then I’m switching to WordPress. I was successful with SoApBoX, and I really like HAVING my stuff on a MySQL database. (I hate CGI).

More news coming up for comic book fans next…. STAY TUNED!

Pocono Web Designers

Hmmm… I just did a search on “Pocono Web Designers” and found I’m only ranking #4 on MSN Search, and #22 on Google (well, I SHOW up a little earlier on the list, but it’s work-related.)

This disturbs me, as once upon a time I was king of all I surveyed.

Three years ago, three sites I made were the #1, 2, & 3 search results for “Homes in the Poconos” (Which of course drew a lot of traffic and leads FROM New York City)… now I see only one is hanging in at #8. (and that site is long gone.).

See, I know all the tricks, and the places to go for search engine placement and submission. I’ll be more that happy to share some of my secrets. Privately. Nothing I would publish publicly, or all of the other pocono web designers will do it.

The one trick I can share is using the words you want to be found for (Like “Pocono Web Designers”, for example)… on a page that is constantly updated and kept fresh will definitely advance your placement.

I certainly hope you folks don’t think that’s what I’m up to here, with my constant reference to Pocono Web Designers over and over in this post.

I’m not saying that I’m not.

I just don’t want you to think it, that’s all. :0)

It’s Vectors for me…

Interesting Discovery:
I use photoshop for most of my graphics. Then I open up the .PSD files in Fireworks to make .gifs (they just look better to me.)

  • Since fireworks is vector-based (rather than rasterized), I converted the .psd file I rendered in poser INTO a .png (Portable network graphics).
  • Then I imported the .png file INTO flash for the front page of EricBrooks.Com
  • Now it expands & contracts with no loss in quality. I couldn’t do that if I had imported a .jpg. Plus the flash file is only 39kb. Using a .jpg that file size (800x600px) would have put it well over 100k.

It’s vector graphics FROM now on for me….
(Just a little something to keep you busy while I DELETE a bunch of files here…)

    Are we happy campers yet?

There. I think the site is not only cross-browser compatible now, but liquid in resolution as well (Except for 600×400… come on dudes, it’s the 21st Century!).

I plead “laziness”, to be honest with you. Faith has been on my case about this for a while now (and she’s right, and she knows I know better)… but I never had the time. I just slapped this together, using one of Deb’s templates, and that was that.

In a professional gig, yes, I’ll spend the next week or so running cross-browser compatibility & resolution checks, make acceptable sacrifices to the overall design… but a personal weblog? Hell, I’ll never take that seriously.

No, I would never tell someone to change their browser. I’ve always believed it’s the designer’s job to make the site work for the viewer, not the other way around.

    Comment Permalinks in MT

I just added permalinks to the comments.

There’s a bunch of tutorials out there, but I forgot to bookmark them, so, like an idiot, I had to do it FROM scratch.

    Here’s what I did:
    In your Comment Listing Template

  • First you need to make an Anchor for each comment entry. Find where it says:<$MTCommentBody$>

    And change it to:
    <a name=”<$MTCommentID pad=”1″$>”></a>
    <$MTCommentBody$>

  • Next, make the permalink. For the sake of argument, I put it at the end of the comment, after the date (<$MTCommentDate$>). You can put it anywhere you want. The code for the permalink is:<a href=”<$MTCGIPath$>mt-comments.cgi?entry_id=<$MTEntryID$>#<$MTCommentID pad=”1″$>”>Link</a>
  • So there…

    Using Images on your buttons

“how do you get the fade effects on your buttons?”

Even though I know kd knows this answer… *wink*…

How to make your buttons go…

    It’s all CSS, my dear!
    1. I made a selector called .”btn”
    2. In my css:
    .btn { background: #FFCC00 url(img/btn.gif); background-repeat: repeat; border-color: #FFCC00; color: #000000; font-weight: bold; font-size: 9pt; font-style: normal; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;}

    3. btn.gif
is the gradient background in the buttons.

    4. <input type=”submit” class=”btn”>

You can more or less use any image as a backround anywhere on your page with css….

    Any questions?

    Guestbook From Hell

I know, you wanna kill me for The Guestbook from Hell, right??? What part, the fact that it’s always down on the server, or the endless questions that don’t print?

    ….well, I solved one of your problems…

The reason that you kept getting error messages was because Yer’s Trooly, kept tampering with the CGI Script…well NO MORE. I fixed it and I’m leaving it alone…(At least until I learn how to configure the sendmail program…then you’ll all be thanked by mail right after you place your entry)

Hey, gimme a break! I never had a CGI-BIN before!

Okay…you beat it out of me…if you don’t want to go through the torture of the Guestbook from Hell you can go to The Guestbook from Heaven….you get there eventually through the Hell one…
