Newz & Gossip (Blog Warz)

  • Whoah… what’s going on here? – Rivervision -vs- Jimformation… I’m afraid to comment much about it except this one is as entertaining as hell! Better go read it before one of them apologizes and takes it down.
  • Last week’s Blog Warz – I really should let this go, but after an amazing barrage of emails with people with their own horror stories of their encounter with “My former blog twin“, few people had the courage to publicly voice an opinion on the matter… so I commend Kare and Simply Lee ( here, here, inital reaction here) for presenting, in my opinion, very well-balanced and courageous viewpoints.I mean… if some people “aren’t allowed to use someone’s site”, or if they reserve a right to reject people based on their “vision” of what the web is… why can’t we express our feelings on our own sites (or password-protected discussion boards) without fear of being menaced? It’s *still* a free country last I checked.
  • Gone Brooklyn – I don’t know why I waited this long, but I added Brooklyn Kid to my list of daily reads (did ya click my Related Links menus yet? Tres Chic, non?)Aside from living right by Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, in Williamsburg, and my new-found home-sickness… Mr. Cosentino is responsible for one of my most favorite fonts… and one of the most popular downloads on this site.

Someone recently told me I still have a “Brooklyn accent” (I was asked to say “Dawg” three times.). Weird, considering most people thought I was from FL or CA because of my lack of an accent when I lived there for 21 years.

    I do say “Fuck” a lot, don’t I? :0)

  • Just so I’m not the next victim of “Radical Feminism”… I also added Brooklyn Girl. Another great site… and she’s kinda cute for a Bunny Rabbit
  • JEEEEEZUS!!!! Can somebody show Dave Winer how to spell “Transitioning”??!!??
  • “I saw ‘dama B’Laden!!!! I saw ‘dama B’Laden!!!!” – That was 4-year-old Johnny’s reaction as we passed a mosque on Northern Boulevard, coming in to NYC friday night. Not a lot of muslims wearing turbans and long beards in the Poconos… so imagine seeing Assama plastered all over the tv, and then seeing a tall man, with a long beard and turban, enter this mosque. Poor kid. He’s gonna be okay.
  • I am strongly against any violence against Muslims in this country, buuuuut…. how the hell am I supposed to react when I see this fruitcake plastered all over the newsstands???? What part of “Nobody supports the Taliban” didn’t he get? This guy is a BEAT-DOWN waiting to happen.
  • Evil Bert is Dead

Sometime last night, Web Designer Dino Ignacio pulled the plug on his long-running internet-cult-classic “Bert is Evil” site. It was his own personal decision. No “cease & desists” or threats involved.

Seeing his work on a pro-Taliban protest was apparently too much for him. The Children’s Television Workshop, is also panicking at the site of one of their creations, broadcast around the world next to the most dangerous man alive.

I think these people need to reach deep down inside, and see the hilarious irony of it all… Osama’s own supporters made an ASSHOLE out of him. And Bert helped. Whether it was our Special Forces slipping it into the printing plates, or the “official story” of an honest mistake by the printer… it was effective and humiliating nonetheless.

The story below about “Sesame Street being bombed” was a fabrication. Elmo, Big Bird, Zoe and the gang are all alive & well. It was propaganda. I took that day’s events, like any good American, and rolled with it…..

<The sound of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” blaring in the background>

I want the memory of that protest in Bangladesh embedded in the world’s mind forever. The world needs to talk about it, and laugh at Ass-ama forever. Let the world know that The Taliban and Al-Qaeda’s contempt for our culture will be the means to their demise… you were humiliated by a muppet, Assama!

    Thank you to…

    • Dino Ignacio – Who has a great-looking site with lots of other fun stuff… check it out.
    • The Children’s Television Workshop, for 31 years of great entertainment, and shaping many of us into the grown-ups we are today…
(They have a great section called “Tragic Times, healing words”, offering help to parents in explaining 9/11…)

    And most of all….

    Font Site Operational

So far A-S is operational on the Font Section. I should be done late tonight, and then back to redesigning my ISP.

    An impassioned plea for peace

At a time where we should all be coming together… it kills me to watch my *FORMER* Blogging Twin, slowly and painfully lose his marbles.

Sources say he stays up all night, guarding his comment box, checking his referrer logs, running traceroute on every visitor… doesn’t eat, sleep or shower (eew..)… just waiting for an attack that may or may not come.

Please, whoever you are… leave Mr. Jenett (pronounced “Paranoid Schizo”) alone?

Can’t we all just get along?Maybe you’re one of the many, many people he recently kicked out of his projects because your host implemented pop-under ads without your consent? Or you redesigned, and forgot to put one of his buttons back up? Or you got one of his creepy emails full of threats for gawd-only-knows-what…

We forgive you for your callous and heartless disregard for this poor man’s feelings… but right now, KNOCK IT OFF…YOU’RE MAKING BABY JESUS CRY! 🙁

Perhaps I share a tiny, miniscule (actually, microscopic!) share of the blame. Maybe I was a little heavy handed yesterday, demanding you stop. I know I shouldn’t feel this way, but I do. Now I am on my knees begging you to stop harassing this “meaningless web person” (in his own words!).

Can’t we all just get along?

I would have come to Joe’s rescue sooner, but I’m a tad busy these days. I am saddened, stunned… and will now join Baby Jesus and weep.

Today’s Lesson: “The more bridges you burn, the less places you have to run and hide.”

    Site update…Newz & Gossip

  • Font Site – Sorry… knee-deep in a redesign project. Still gonna be a few more days.
  • Updated the related links at WHUZZUP! to make room for new ones… it was kinda painful to remove two of them. SKIZZ was one of the coolest guys I ever met on the web. And wherever Amber Eden is right now… I hope she’s doing well rebuilding her life, and finds a way to get in touch. I wish her all the very best, and I miss her terribly.
  • Faith takes cabs back and forth to work again – A sure sign that New York City is going back to normal. Now if only she’d start taking more spy pics of that cute secretary of hers again…Funny thing about mass transit in NYC. My mother always told me “there was at least one wierdo on every train or bus”. All the years I rode the “M” train, I never saw one. :0)
  • On Metafocker: Chinese food. Is it chicken? Is it cat? Do you really care?
  • Dammit…leave Joe alone! – Apparently some insensitive bastard ruined Joe Jennet’s day yesterday. His site was reviewed, and they used a screenshot of his site without his permission. He went apeshit. So he asked for opinions. “Was he right or wrong?”

And some idiot told the truth…

“Joe, with all due respect… I’m trying to figure out if you’re just partially or totally nuts. Someone reviews your site, and you’re going anal about a screenshot? I don’t get it.
(I just bet some people that this will be deleted the second you see it.)”

WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING????
This is a guy who surrounds himself with people that only tell him what he wants to hear… you can’t post stuff like that?!!??

Let me catch the jerk responsible… I’ll kick his ass for making my friend Joe cry like that.

  • This week’s tutorial at HTML Goodies: So, You Want A Pop-Under Window, Huh?. A great tutorial that show us all how to make Pop-under ads. They’re great. They hide behind a page, so people can get what they want, and read your pop-up later… which makes them very useful and effective.
  • Font Site Update

Sorry guys… still haven’t finished the changeover to the new location (actually, the fonts have moved, now it’s a matter of changing all the links.). Couple that with work, two major design projects, personal crap (which pretty much no one cares, so I won’t even bother)… and well, I HAVE TO FUCKING SLEEP SOME TIME!

Another day or two, I promise.

My POP3 E-Mail will have to wait, The Cardshop works fine… Halloween cards coming soon.

For those leaving nasty Complaints… ummmm, remind me again how much you’re paying me for these fonts?

Do you want my blood or not???

The Pocono Record had it’s annual blood drive yesterday. Some lucky person out there will be the proud recipient of a pint of my Type “O” Universal…

I have been trying since the attack. One place turned a pack of us away, and another ran out of bags.

I can deal with just about anything… just don’t prick me in the finger. I hate that. It’s the worst part.

Yeah, I know it’s not going to the World Trade Center victims. Hospitals all over the country need blood on a regular basis, and if this is what Americans needed to get off their ass, then that’s cool.

For some odd reason, throughout the whole process, my mind drifted off, and I starting thinking about a little girl in Minneapolis who is about to be in a car accident…

After a coke and a pack of cookies, I was back on my way for more work. But you know, knowing you just helped save someone’s life out there; that’s a great feeling. Giving blood is cool.

But they really got to do something about that finger-pricking stuff.

PLEASE READ: Download and E-Mail problems at EricBrooks.Com

Downloading: Well, it seems personal sites on NBCi are no more. Most of the zip files that you have download here were stored there, dating back three-or-so years ago when it was XOOM, my very first home on the web… and they offered unlimited storage to its members.

Those days are long gone, and now any of us using XOOM/NBCi as storage is being directed to X-Drive Plus, where members can try it free for 15 days.

    I don’t think so.

All of my .zip files are now being moved to another location, and should be done by the end of the weekend. Which solves problem #1.

E-Mail: There appears to be a problem with the “sendmail” program on this server. This fucks upeffects the following functions on this site: My E-Mail, The Card Shop, The Complaint Department, WHUZZUPDATE!… and I’m sure more will come in, as I combat an ulcer with Alka Seltzer.

Just know that we’re (the techs at Server-Space, and myself.) aware, and working feverishly on fixing the problem. Keep checking WHUZZUP! for any new developments…

    Thanx for your patience…

    America needs to laugh again

Seriously. It’s part of the healing process.

You’d have to understand my origins to understand me. I’m from Brooklyn… we are world-renowned for our sick humor at the darkest times.

Growing up in dilapidated house, no male role models to fix things as they broke… (My friends have been calling the house “1313 Mockingbird Lane” since Junior High School). You had to laugh at it. When I built a recording studio in my basement, to watch the toughest “gangstas” in Brooklyn haul ass, as sewer rats the size of chihuauhas came out to hear their lyrics…

    That was funny as hell!

There were a lot of hard times there, it was overcrowded, it was hostile and dangerous to be a white person in that neighborhood after a while…

    Humor got us through.

Early attempts to make us laugh after the tragedy was pretty bad. Poking fun at the WTC is like making fun of a rape victim (which is never funny, and when you think about it… that’s what happened to America on 9/11).

    However…

    • Al Qaeda announced Thursday that it would lay off 5,000 or more holy warriors. – Fucking hilarious!
    • The Onion shows us how it’s done with its Special Report: “Holy Fucking Shit! Attack on America” – American satire at its best….. CHECK IT OUT!
All links via MetaFilter… which brings me to today’s Newz & Gossip:
    • The end of MetaFilter? – Former “A-Lister” and Webby loser Jason Kottke and MetaFilter mastermind (and former “A-lister”) Matthew Haughey discuss (as we’re all apparently ignored) how MetaFilter is a “hassle”, “may be scrapped”, and “turned into something it wasn’t meant to be”…

Uhm… that would be total domination and worship of the “A-List”, wasn’t it?

Matt, boobalah, do you realize what a juggernaut you have created?

It’s valuable property… and if you play your cards right (ie: stop complaining about what a hassle it is to maintain.) You can make a small fortune selling it off with all your hard work and brilliant coding.

Me? I’m all for the worship of the A-List…

    why?

Because there is a new “A-List”. Run by the Axis of Jon Sullivan and Matthew Rossi (as confirmed here…).

We MUST worship them! Compelling content and good discussion is what the people want… Besides, I know these guys. If I suck up to them enough,
    ***I can become an “A-Lister”.*** :0)

    • I will now proudly resume my role and bring you the finest in Newz, Gossip, and Pro-American Propaganda…

    Well, maybe…

Tomorrow I face a judge on various charges for what happened over the summer… you all know what happened after that, and obviously this “Police State” isn’t done punishing us.

For what? For being stranded, and doing the best you can to stay afloat.

Will I do jail time? Will I face a stiff fine? Or will this Magistrate decide we’ve been punished enough?

Sentencing is tomorrow morning in Dingman’s Ferry if you all have nothing better to do.

I’m sure the same people who had a field day cracking “Trailer Jokes” as the Sheriffs locked us out of our home last February are going to have a field day with this one…

Oh well, at least they’ll be laughing again. Laughter is good.

    Just a reminder…

    • Banned Books Week – See what’s been banned/is planned on being banned… right here in America??!!?? Show your support against ignorance!
    • The FBI has uncovered evidence that September 22nd may be another potential day of terrorist attacks. They got this from many of the suspects nailed recently. Off the record, I hear from insiders that some of them are “singing like canaries” against Osama bin Laden, Iraq, other terrorists, Al-Qaeda…and giving a lot of crucial information about future attacks, hideouts, and strategic layouts…While I’m extremely grateful, there will be no “Black-eyed virgins waiting for these guys in Heaven” now. Uh…you dudes *DO* realize that, right?

      Please be careful tomorrow, y’all…..

    • I think it’s time to put the wraps on America Under Attack. It’s definitely the calm before the storm, and unless any further events unfold… We’ll all be bracing ourselves for Operation: Infinite Justice.
    • I’ll also be taking this time to finish writing my account of the recent events in Ground Zero: The Untold Stories. Ever wonder how a newspaper operates when a story bigger than Pearl Harbor and Titanic combined unfolds right in front of you? STAY TUNED.It’ll also feature first-hand accounts by many of my friends who were right there in the thick of it (of course submissions are always welcome…).

It’ll be here at SoApBoX, and then eventually be moved to its new home at Remember 9-11.

It may or may not feature a chilling, non-fictional chapter called “My name is Maria“, about a woman who graphically describes buried alive.

I’m still mulling over this, as I feel there were plenty of powerful true stories out there. Last week, it *definitely* would have been in bad taste…. however, there’s plenty of legend and folklore circulating around this tragedy already (Satan’s Face, Nostradamus, the cop surfing down, the firemen in the SUV)… and I feel there will be more as the years roll by. If I include it… there will be a stern ***READ AT YOUR OWN RISK*** warning on it, I promise.

One of the people who told me their tale also has up-close and gruesome photos of the carnage at Ground Zero. I’m not sure how many I would be comfortable posting… but I do want America to remember what happened to us, and I want us to stay angry and supportive of military action.

    • Crucial Reads for America:

    • Truth or Consequences – By William Saletan – Currently we’re all feeling a form of “survivor’s guilt”, or are our heads being played with by our enemies…? It’s a A REAL EYE-OPENER!If we withdraw from the world and/or change our foreign policy… then we have given the terrorists exactly what they set out to do.
    • Stand Proud America! – In 1973, Canadian radio host Gordon Sinclair broadcast “The Americans”… showing support during an unpopular war amid great anti-American sentiment. Fifteen years after his death, his words come alive again in a widely-circulated E-Mail called “America: The Good Neighbours”… giving us all a boost when we need it most. While our enemies spread propaganda and slam us… someone remembers all the good the United States has done.
    • Did you remember to use MetaFocker in a sentence today?

Banned Books Week begins Sept. 22nd

    James and the Giant Peach…BANNED???!!???

I was reminded recently by Deb (“Yoo-hoo… I’m up here”) Smouse that September 22nd begins “Banned Book Week”.

…excuse me for a second… while I check a newspaper, and make sure Jerry Falwell didn’t get elected President while I took a nap this afternoon.

Banning books… isn’t that the first thing Hitler did when he became Chancellor of Germany?

It kinda touches on today’sthis week’s overall topic:

“If the effort against terrorism is to succeed, we must court, not ignore, world opinion. And we must learn to listen, even when we dislike what we hear. Especially when we dislike it.”
Jeffrey Zeldman, responding to irate readers for his link to yesterday’s editorial in South African Daily Mail & Guardian

I love being an American. I can’t think of a better place to be. But let’s face it… we’re also the most naive, nosy, closed-minded, arrogant fucks walking on this planet.

Please tell me I’m not the only person in the Western Hemisphere that knew Third World countries have hated our guts for decades????

It got to the point where I couldn’t take the “Anti-American” sentiment on MetaFilter this past week… You bring up Hiroshima, and I’ll normally remind someone that we went back after the war, paid billions in reparations, and helped the Japanese rebuild. When Kuwait was invaded by Saddam… they came to *US* for help. When these little piss-on countries need billions in foriegn aid, with no possible way to repay it… who do they go to? The United States, that’s who.

I could have blasted these people. But instead, I listened. America should listen right now.

There’s no excusing what happened though. Those 5,000+ people didn’t deserve to die (Including three firemen that Carole & I knew). It’s still my belief that these terrorists will do what they do, simply for a taste of notariety, and well, they’re assholes. It’s still my belief that Osama bin Laden and Al-Qaeda needs to be wiped out of existence, and if the Taliban wants to get in the way… so be it.

But Napalming the people of Afghanistan; Poor people, already ravaged by war, opressed by the Taliban, fleeing their country in terror… they don’t deserve to die either.

Saddam Hussein (of all people), recently stated “Maybe the U.S. needs to rethink their foriegn policy”.

America needs to listen. America needs their eyes and minds wide open right now.

God gave you two ears and one mouth… He was hoping you’d listen twice as much as you spoke.

    Make 9/11 – “Hero Day”?

This was just submitted to me at work, it seems like it also went to the Daily News as well:

    "Hero Day"

We have enough walls and memorials in just about every city of this great nation, you will see signs in an emergency dial 911. I offer that our elected public officials set in motion a bill that 9/11 (September 11th) henceforth be known as Hero Day. A day set aside to honor all the police, fire, emergency service technicians, and all those who put their lives on the line each day for the benefit of their fellow man. I further submit that a law be invoked, appropriately named the "Blue Law." This law would require that all stores and businesses to remain closed. No Business, no sales, no holiday. A day set aside for family, friends, and communities to gather together. Due to greed we have lost the meaning of Memorial, Labor, and Veterans Days let this day remain 9/11 forever. We should never forget.

    Dedicated to The Twin Towers

    NYFD - NYPD

God bless the victims and the families
    God Bless American forever

    Proud to be an American,

    Retired NYPD

What do you guys think? I think it’s a hell of a great idea…

Help is on the way – A large convoy of trucks is lining up right here in Stroudsburg with medical supplies, and a whole bunch of other goodies from states going as far back as Indiana… on it’s way to NYC. Just waiting for clearance from the George Washington Bridge.
